Emergency Winter Weather Plan

Southgate Families - Please read the following Winter Weather Communication Plan that explains how we will communicate any weather closings or delays. Please remember that we are Southgate Independent School District and are NOT part of Campbell County Schools.

The Winter Weather Communication Plan is linked here and written below.

Winter Weather Communication Plan
Winter weather is upon us; therefore, we need to be prepared for any potential alterations to our daily schedules and routines within the Southgate Independent School District. We will be utilizing our new Apptegy notification system when it comes to any type of changes to our school day plans. In order to receive the most accurate information, please check to ensure that all phone numbers, email addresses, and emergency contacts for your family are up to date. You can contact the main office at 859-441-0743 with any questions pertaining to your contact information. The Apptegy notification system will be pulling all information through Infinite Campus so it’s imperative that all contact information is accurate. We also recommend a plan for child-care arrangements should we ever have to use a delay schedule, cancel school for students, or even close school early.

School vs. No School
The Southgate Independent School District will always have the safety of our students and staff as a top priority. The decision to have school or to cancel school based on inclement weather conditions can be a challenging one depending on the various circumstances. The school district will continue to work with the city officials along with other entities when assessing road conditions, wind chill factor, precipitation accumulation, etc. Once all the appropriate information is gathered, the school district will consider the following options:
❖Open on a regular school schedule
❖Follow a delay schedule – one hour or two-hour delay
❖Close school – traditional snow day – (NO NTI)
❖NTI day – instruction will occur remotely with teacher(s) communicating expectations
❖Early Dismissal: due to weather conditions in the morning/afternoon
Our team will always attempt to make a decision in a timely manner so all stakeholders can plan accordingly.

Communication Platform
The school district will be utilizing the Apptegy notification system when it comes to notifying our families, staff members, and all other stakeholders about any type of schedule change to our normal routine. Apptegy has the ability to post notifications to the district Facebook page, Twitter, and Instagram while also sending messages through text messages, voice calls, and email. Please remember that we are Southgate Independent Schools and NOT Campbell County Schools.

School is Closed: Traditional Snow Day - NO NTI
Schools will not be open for regular business and no instruction will take place. All afternoon and evening activities will be cancelled. If conditions improve for roadways and sidewalks, you will be notified about after-school activities being able to occur as planned. The school district will be utilizing the available make-up days on our school calendar when necessary due to a snow day.

NTI Day
There may be times when conditions are not favorable to in person learning, but learning will continue using NTI (Non-Traditional Instruction). Any planned NTI Day will count as a day of school and students will be required to complete activities which have been communicated by their teacher(s). Each teacher will be required to provide clear instructions on the NTI schedule and expectations. During NTI days, breakfast (8:00-9:00am) and lunch (12:00-1:00pm) may be picked up at the side cafeteria door.
If you have questions regarding your child’s instruction on NTI days, please call the school (859-441-0743) or email your child’s teacher.

School is Delayed
In the event of a one-hour delay or two-hour delay, school will begin one hour/two hours later than normal. School dismissal times remain the same, and afternoon and evening activities continue as usual unless weather conditions deteriorate throughout the day. If that is the case, you will be notified.

School Dismisses Early
If weather conditions are forecasted to deteriorate while students are in school, there is a possibility a decision will need to be made regarding closing school early. Our goal will be to make this decision as early as possible to allow everyone to make any necessary arrangements.

Make-Up Days
In the event school is closed, we will follow the district calendar when it comes to making up any necessary instructional days. All changes to the district calendar must be approved by the Board of Education and will be communicated to our families, staff, and other appropriate entities. The current school calendar can be located on our district website.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation when it comes to any type of alteration to our daily schedules. We will continue to be mindful of all variables when it comes to making decisions due to any type of inclement weather conditions. As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff will continue to be a top priority within the Southgate Independent School District.
